KGB chief: Nothing extraordinary is going on now

MINSK (BelTA) – Nothing extraordinary or unexpected is going on in the country right now. This also pertains to developments related to the election campaign, KGB Chairman Valery Vakulchik said as he met with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 1 June, BelTA has learned.

At the meeting with Aleksandr Lukashenko, the KGB chief noted that right before the meeting a journalist of the ONT TV channel asked him if the KGB has changed its mode of operation in the run-up to the election. Valery Vakulchik started telling the president what he had answered. However, the head of state responded immediately.

“I know that you said that you always have a special working environment and there is nothing to change in the work of the security agency. You have always been on the alert and I have always kept you in good shape. Therefore, I do not think that you need to change something,” the Belarusian leader said.

“That is what I said. I told the journalist that nothing extraordinary, surprising or unexpected has happened or is going on right now. We anticipated the current developments and we informed you about them beforehand,” Valery Vakulchik said.

“That is true,” the president said.

“However, some circumstantial and non-essential developments are taking place,” the KGB chief noted. He assured that his agency is absolutely in control of the situation. “Some minor things have always been and will always be in place,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
