Lukashenko expects public prosecution to more aggressively respond to some actions

MINSK (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko presented Andrei Shved as the country's new prosecutor general on 10 September and made a number of statements about the public and political situation in the country, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stated: “The purpose of the [opposition's] Coordination Council is to take control of the entire protest and opposition movement and rise above all. In other words, power split is in progress. There is an attempt to seize power but ways are different. It is the situation today.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked that despite external influence there are quite many organizers and proponents of the relevant policy inside the country. “Regardless of foreign control there are quite many active organizers and proponents of the policy of these Telegram channels inside the country. They control tens, hundreds, thousands of people. They organize these protests, organize in advance. Many cells were created before the presidential election: cells of 3-5 people at small enterprises and cells of up to ten people at large enterprises. They have been preparing for it after the parliamentary elections,” he noted. “We lived in a calm country and thought that things will stay calm. No way! And today they've popped up.”

The president stressed that public prosecution officers should guard the law and guarantee the safe development of the state. “As for various coordination councils, other organizations… Both the Constitutional Court and the prosecutor general in his time (I think you are of the same opinion, too) gave an evaluation of these coordination councils,” he said. “You should take more powerful, more aggressive prosecution measures in response to such actions.”

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, preventive measures should be part of the public prosecution work. “And they should vary depending on the gravity of the situation. The graver the situation is, the more aggressive your actions should be,” the president noted.
