Kochanova calls on all Belarusians to show active civic stance
MINSK (BelTA) – An active civic stance of every Belarusian is particularly important in the Year of People's Unity, Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova said at the opening of the fifth session of the upper chamber of Belarus' parliament of the seventh convocation on 2 April, BelTA has learned.
“In the Year of People's Unity, an active civic stance of every one of us is especially important, because it helps shape the future of the country and the Belarusian nation,” Natalya Kochanova said.
The Belarusian state policy has always prioritized people, their rights, freedoms, and lawful interests as well as such social values as peace, stability, order, and progress, she stressed. “At present, Belarus faces a wide range of threats that we could not even imagine in the past. Unfortunately, we are getting more and more familiar with such terms as economic sanctions, double standards, information aggression, distortions of history, color revolutions, and hybrid warfare. The goal to unite the society in order to respond to new challenges has never been more significant,” Natalya Kochanova noted.
For this, Belarus needs effective legal regulations and an up-to-date legal system based on the Constitution. The president signed the decree to establish the Constitutional Commission that includes members of the Council of the Republic. The head of state gave the commission a very responsible task – to draw up proposals for amendments to the Constitution, taking into account opinions collected during discussions, meetings with state officials, and from citizens' appeals.
“Updating certain constitutional and legal norms should help strengthen national security and order, achieve social stability and concord in the society. The amended Constitution will lay the basis for the country's political, social, and economic development for many years to come,” Natalya Kochanova said. “All members of the Council of the Republic should get involved in this process. You represent entire regions of our country and you should spread information among people about the decisions of the Belarusian People's Congress and the progress of the constitutional reform,” she added.
