Belarus, Latvia discuss transit of Belarusian goods via Latvian seaports

MINSK, 27 December (BelTA) - Prospects for increasing transit and transhipment of Belarusian goods via Latvian ports were discussed at the 7th meeting of the Belarusian-Latvian intergovernmental commission for economic and scientific-technical cooperation, which was held in Riga on 22-23 December, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Foreign Ministry.

The Belarusian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister - Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian part of the commission Alexander Guryanov, Latvian one by Economy Minister Daniels Pavlyuts. The meeting was attended by representatives of government bodies, research organizations, educational institutions and business community of Belarus and Latvia.

The meeting reviewed the status of implementation of the protocol of the previous meetings of the commission, discussed the progress in the development of mutually advantageous cooperation in industrial production, agriculture, construction, transport and logistics, energy and communications, science and technology, standardization and metrology, as well as in investment, trade and tourism. The parties discussed the development of cross-border and interregional cooperation

A meeting of the Belarusian-Latvian Business Cooperation Council was held within the framework of the meeting of the commission. It was attended by General Director of Milavitsa Dmitry Dichkovsky and Director of the the national association of industrial enterprises BelAPP Sergei Zharnikov.

“President of Latvia Andris Berzinsh met with the co-chairs and members of the council to examine the ways to increase regional and cross-border cooperation, develop transport and logistics infrastructure, increase transit and transshipment of potash fertilizers and other Belarusian goods via ports of Latvia,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The Belarusian sided organized a seminar on topical issues of development of economic interaction in the context of the Customs Union and the Single Economic Space of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia for Latvia official and business circles.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister of Belarus Vasily Kazakevich met with Deputy State Secretary of the Agriculture Ministry of Latvia Aivars Lapins to discuss supplies of Belarusian farm produce and food to the markets of the EU member states.

Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander Tsyganov and Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technology Alexander Zhigulich held several meetings at the Academy of Sciences and the Education Ministry of Latvia. The parties agreed to expand sci-tech cooperation in land management, environment, chemistry, medicine and information technologies.

Several bilateral documents were signed during the meetings, including a cooperation agreement in science and education between the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Daugavpils University of Latvia.
