CSTO views biological weapons convention as important tool for disarmament

MINSK, 8 December (BelTA) – The CSTO views the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction (BTWC) as an important tool in the field of disarmament. This CSTO position was voiced by the head of the Belarusian delegation - Permanent Representative of Belarus in Geneva Mikhail Khvostov at the Seventh Review Conference of the States Parties to the BTWC in Geneva on 5-23 December, Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Savinykh told a news briefing.

Mikhail Khvostov stressed the importance of the Convention as one of the most significant international instruments in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and also outlined the priorities of CSTO at the conference,” said Andrei Savinykh.

Andrei Savinykh added that the Belarusian delegation comprised Vladimir Gerasimovich, head of the Foreign Ministry’s department for international security and arms control.

The conference in Geneva will assess the BTWC efficiency, consider new high-tech achievements relevant to the Convention. The meeting participants will also assess the progress made in the implementation of the obligations to the Convention, decisions and recommendations coordinated by the previous review conferences.
