Current Polish establishment hostile to Belarus

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – The current Polish establishment is taking a hostile position towards Belarus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Savinykh told BelTA as he commented on the statement of Polish Ambassador Leszek Szerepka in a Minsk press conference on 16 November.

“During the press conference the Polish Ambassador to Belarus expressed not only a unilateral and biased judgment but also allowed himself a crude distortion of reality,” Andrei Savinykh said.

The Ambassador complained on “some seizure of the property of 16 Polish houses” in Belarus. “The inside of the Polish houses has been the property of the Union of Poles in Belarus from the very moment of their establishment, and still remains the property of this association,” the Belarusian official noted.

In his words, the similar situation is with Mr Szerepka’s statements with regard to the building of the Polish embassy in Minsk. Five years ago, Poland was duly notified about the termination of the lease of the embassy building. In 2008 a land plot in a prestigious area of Minsk was allocated to the Polish embassy to construct a new building. Poland did not take any visible steps during this time and now starts advancing claims towards standard procedures similar to all diplomatic missions, the press secretary of the Foreign Ministry said.

In his words, the Polish Ambassador is also insincere about Poland’s position as an observer of the democratic development in Belarus. There are enough examples to prove that the Polish side has been actively interfering with Belarus’ domestic policy issues. These actions go contrary to the international law and the UN Charter which the Polish Ambassador cited during the press conference, Andrei Savinykh said.
