Belarus, South Africa have good prospects for cooperation

MINSK, 9 November (BelTA) – Belarus and the Republic of South Africa have a good basis for boosting cooperation, said Andrei Molchan, who was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the Republic of South Africa on 8 November.

“On one hand, the Republic of South Africa is a distant and exotic country for Belarus. However, we have a big potential for dynamic bilateral cooperation,” Andrei Molchan said.

In his words, the two countries might establish relations in the sci-tech sector as well as promote cooperation in trade. “Belarusian companies, Belshina in particular, have a strong presence on the South African market. Belarus also exports its tractors and other vehicles to South Africa. I think we will continue our cooperation in this direction,” he noted.

As regards possible high-level contacts, Andrei Molchan believes that the countries have not reached that level of cooperation yet. The two states, however, continue developing relations between companies, the chambers of commerce and industry. Thus, the Belarusian-South African joint trade and economic commission met not long ago to define strategic cooperation areas. The recent ministerial consultations have laid a foundation for a political dialogue between the two countries.
