IMF hails Belarus’ drive towards single exchange rate

MINSK, 17 October (BelTA) – The IMF is positive about the measures taken by the Belarusian government and the National Bank to unify the exchange rate of the Belarusian ruble. Head of the IMF mission Chris Jarvis made the relevant statement at the end of the IMF mission’s visit to Belarus on 17 October. The IMF mission stayed in Belarus on 5-17 October.

“The government and the National Bank are starting to take the necessary measures. For example, yesterday’s statement on the exchange rate is a good step forward. I think it will be very beneficial for Belarus,” remarked Chris Jarvis.

“We are impressed by actions and commitments of the government and the National Bank,” said the head of the IMF mission. “They have taken a series of very good actions and their plans for the next year are oriented in the right direction”.

The sides had useful discussions during the IMF mission's stay in Belarus. “At the end of our work we are more confident regarding the intentions of the government and the National Bank than when we started working,” said Chris Jarvis.

He also made it clear there was no direct link between the EurAsEC Anticrisis Fund and the International Monetary Fund. “We cannot make decisions on behalf of the Anticrisis Fund. It is their personnel who should keep an eye on the fulfillment of the agreement signed by Belarus and the EurAsEC Anticrisis Fund,” believes the IMF representative. Chris Jarvis said that some parts of the agreement were beneficial and reflected a sound economic policy.
