S Korea to ramp up cooperation with Belarus
GOMEL, 12 October (BelTA) – The Republic of Korea is interested in expanding cooperation with Belarus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Belarus Kang Weon Sik told reporters on 12 October following his meeting with the top officials of Gomel Oblast, BelTA has learnt.
Belarus and Korea have great cooperation prospects, the ambassador believes. However, the two countries need to learn more about each other, because the Korean people know little about Belarus. The embassy of the Republic of Korea, in turn, will do its utmost to eliminate the information gap. “We have great cooperation potential in economy and culture,” the diplomat said.
Korea is interested in the supplies of Gomselmash farm machines. “The products of this company are well-known around the world, and I hope to see Gomselmash machines on the Korean fields,” the ambassador said. He praised the high quality of Spartak confectionary products.
Gomel Oblast Governor Vladimir Dvornik noted that the Belarusian region is determined to build up trade and economic cooperation with Korea. “To this end, we need to unite our efforts to increase the production output and investments that can be channeled into Gomel Oblast. This will benefit both parties,” the governor is convinced.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea is on a visit to Gomel on 11-12 October. The diplomat is touring the major companies of the region.
In January-August 2011, the trade between Gomel Oblast and the Republic of Korea made $3 million or 189.6% as against the same period last year. The bulk of exports (over 60%) to South Korea is made by carbon fiber produced by Svetlogorsk Khimvolokno. The major importers of Korean products include Belarusian Steelworks, Svetlogorsk Khimvolokno, Remeza and Komintern.
