Single legal act on hunting, fishing in Belarus

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – A single legal act should be worked out promptly to regulate hunting and fishing, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said at the government session held on 19 April to discuss the development of hunting and fishing.

The President demanded things should be put in order, no violations will be tolerated. The head of state stressed close attention had always been paid to nature management in Belarus because the country lacks considerable reserves of extractable resources and therefore efforts should be put into preserving what the country has.

Alexander Lukashenko reminded he once issued an instruction to fix problems of nepotism in personnel appointments in the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen. “Examining the appointments, I saw the extent of our officials’ interest in having you-scratch-my-back-I-scratch-yours people working there”. About two dozens of executives and personal drivers of big bosses were fired. The President added: “It prompted me to take a closer look at the problem. Visiting the regions, I can see now the plunder that we had twenty years ago is no more”.

Alexander Lukashenko remarked everyone is eager to hunt and fish to one’s own content but they have to pay for the pleasure in line with the law, in line with the established procedure. “Without it we will get what we had twenty years ago: they killed everything, they exterminated fish with electric fishing rods,” he said. Now the situation is different: the number of animals is excessive and has to be contained according to the established procedure.

In his words, as he appointed new executives for the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen, he gave instructions to examine all drawbacks and prepare proposals. “Now I would like to hear about problems so that we can make decisions. As far as I understand, the group is led by Sergei Rumas. He is an ardent hunter and fisherman. According to my data, he has never violated the established procedure,” said the President.

Alexander Lukashenko believes that the countries that treasure their natural resources should be kept in mind as decisions on hunting and fishing are made.

The President stressed there are several things to be discussed. “Let’s give answers and pass a single legal act within a short time, let’s say, by the end of H1 2012, so that everyone, who wants to go fishing and hunting, should use it as a guideline,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
