Large families in Belarus to get new housing within three years

BREST, 17 April (BelTA) – A new housing concept in Belarus provides for an increase in housing construction for certain categories of people in the short term, Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Kalinin said at the meeting of the Brest oblast executive committee on 16 April.

In Belarus there are too many people in need of improving housing conditions, the Vice Premier said. The figure stands at 265,000 people in Minsk alone at a time when St Petersburg with its 4-million population has only 195,000 registered with the relevant bodies. “We should keep this issue under control in future,” Anatoly Kalinin said.

In his words, the country has set forth a task to reach 9,5 million square meters of housing by 2015, with half of the housing to be built independently. There are also plans to boost rental housing construction, with soft loans and budgetary resources envisaged for it.

At the same time the volume of housing construction for socially protected categories of the population will be increased as well. Thus, housing for large families will make up 22% of the total by 2013. The construction of housing for young families with two children will exceed 20%. As a result, large families will be able to improve their housing conditions within three years after registering with the relevant bodies. Military will get new housing within five years after registering, those serving in Minsk – within seven years.
