Only dialogue can de-escalate Belarus-EU tensions

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ relations with the European Union can be effectively de-escalated only via a dialogue, Andrei Savinykh, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, told BelTA as he commented on the statements made by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and other ministers for foreign affairs of the European Union.

The official said: “We have paid attention to the statements that have been made. It is important to underline several things. All the processes going on in Belarus are in strict compliance with Belarusian laws. Tuning them to external influence is out of the question. Contrariwise, external pressure is likely to slow down the development of the situation”.

Andrei Savinykh also remarked: “We would like these statements to reflect the emerging understanding that the real compromise and a dialogue are possible only through negotiations in a calm, respectful and productive environment. It is the generally recognized principal position of the Belarusian side”.

“It is extremely important for the statements to be transformed into real deeds. Only then we will be able to effectively de-escalate our relations,” said the Press Secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.
