Belarus, Myanmar study joint oil and gas projects

MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) – Belarus and Myanmar are studying joint oil and gas projects, Belarus Premier Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with Energy Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Than Htay in the House of Government on 9 April.

According to the head of government, Belorusneft will make a partner in joint oil and gas projects in Myanmar. The Belarusian company has a rich experience of providing services abroad (Venezuela, Algeria, Iraq, India, Cuba, the Russian Federation). Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed that Belorusneft specializes in oil production at new deposits as well as at more advanced development stages. “The issue of further development of deposits is of current interest to your country,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich addressing the Myanmar official.

“Joint projects are under the government’s permanent control. This work is multidimensional,” the Belarusian Premier said. These are upgrades and repairs of gas turbines, design and construction of power lines, industrial development of mineral deposits. “Now we are considering Myanmar’s proposals on gold, copper and stannum deposits,” Mikhail Myasnikovich added.

He sees great prospects in agricultural cooperation as well. Mikhail Myasnikovich confirmed Belarus’ readiness to build in Myanmar a number of engineering plants to produce automobile, tractor and other equipment. According to the Belarusian Premier, “this is far from being a full list. We will create conditions for successful work for companies of Belarus and Myanmar.”

The Prime Minister pledged quality and timely fulfillment of all the obligations to implement the joint projects discussed during the official visit to Myanmar in December last year. Mikhail Myasnikovich emphasized that the joint projects will be implemented by the two countries within the framework of the Single Economic Space of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. The three countries are in talks on establishment of a free trade zone with ASEAN where Myanmar is a member, the Belarusian Premier said.

Mikhail Myasnikovich thanked the Government and the President of Myanmar for hospitality and attention to the Belarusian delegation during the Myanmar visit. He emphasized that Belarus is happy about the progress in Myanmar’s development and its stronger positions on the international arena.

Mikhail Myasnikovich informed that a preliminary agreement was reached on the visit of Myanmar’s President Thein Sein in 2012.

After the meeting with the Prime Minister of Belarus, Myanmar Energy Minister Than Htay stated that one of the goals of the visit to Belarus is to assess the potential for cooperation in all areas. “At the meeting with the Prime Minister of Belarus several cooperation proposals were announced. One of them is to start assembling oilfield equipment on the territory of Myanmar,” said the Energy Minister.

The Energy Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and a delegation of the state owned Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) are in Belarus on a visit on 8-12 April. The visit was made possible thanks to the agreements reached during the visit of Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich to Myanmar on 1-3 December 2011. It is planned that the foreign delegation will visit the Fidmash company, filling station No. 29 Sychikovo in Rechitsa and industrial facilities of Belorusneft. The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar is responsible for prospecting, extraction and refining of oil and gas, manufacture and handling of petroleum products.

During the visit of Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich to Myanmar the sides achieved important agreements on cooperation in industry, energy and mining. In February-March 2012, Myanmar welcomed Belarusian delegations of Belenergo, Nature and Environment Ministry, Industry Ministry, Belgorkhimprom. Following the visits the sides identified specific actions to enhance cooperation. There are prospects for bilateral cooperation in the field of education.

In 2010, the trade between Myanmar and Belarus amounted to $2.2 million. In 2011, the bilateral trade was already $27.3 million, including Belarusian export reaching $26.6 million (up 12 times to 2010), import $0.8 million (up 20 times).
