Naryshkin elected Union State PA Chairman

MOSCOW, 5 April (BelTA) – Speaker of the Russian State Duma Sergei Naryshkin has been elected Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State at today’s 41st PA session in Moscow, BelTA has learnt.

The post of the PA Chairman became vacant following the parliamentary elections in the Russian Federation in December 2011. Former speaker of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament Boris Gryzlov who led the PA for 8 years refused to run for reelection.

The candidature of Sergei Naryshkin has been supported unanimously.

Sergei Naryshkin, in his speech, thanked the Union State MPs and pledged to use every opportunity to enhance the status of the Parliamentary Assembly, consolidate the unity of the peoples of Belarus and Russia and strengthen integration.

In his words, the current session is the first after the parliamentary elections in Russia in December 2011. “Although the composition of the Parliamentary Assembly has changed, our common intention to strengthen integration remains a top priority. The changes to the Russian delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly might give an additional impetus to the PA activities,” he said.
