Turkmenistan President wants closer ties with Belarus

MINSK, 27 April (BelTA) – President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has pointed to good progress in Belarus-Turkmenistan relations and declared Turkmenistan’s intention to expand cooperation with Belarus across multiple fields. The Turkmenistan President made this statement as he met with President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on 27 April, BelTA has learnt.

The Turkmenistan President thanked his Belarusian counterpart for the invitation to visit Belarus. He reminded that last year the President of Belarus paid an official visit to Turkmenistan. During that visit the parties drew up plans to promote cooperation in the political, trade and economic and humanitarian fields.

“We have similar views on the political agenda. You always support us on the international arena,” Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.

The Turkmenistan President noted that good trends can be observed in Belarus-Turkmenistan trade and economic cooperation; the increasing bilateral trade is a testimony to that. “We use Belarusian tractors and farm machines and will continue doing that,” Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.

He agreed with Alexander Lukashenko that the countries have advanced in joint projects in humanitarian and social fields. The Turkmenistan President mentioned the Days of Belarusian Culture that were held in Turkmenistan in April. In his words, the countries made good progress in expanding cooperation in education, science and healthcare.

“We are working to deepen our cooperation. I hope that the visit will give a boost to the further development of the bilateral relations,” the President of Turkmenistan said.

He praised a considerable personal contribution of the Belarusian President to the expansion of the bilateral ties.
