BPS-Sberbank expects to issue American Express cards in Belarus soon

MINSK, 21 August (BelTA) - BPS-Sberbank expects to start issuing American Express cards in Belarus in the near future, Deputy Chairman of the Board of BPS-Bank Oleg Borodko told the media.

On 21 August BPS-Sberbank and Belarusbank signed a partnership agreement to accept American Express cards in Belarus. Belarusbank will service the American Express cards in retail and service industry organizations, including on the Internet. The project will significantly expand the network of AmEx cards in Belarus. Today, the network of Belarusbank and BPS-Bank comprises almost 20,000 commercial retail facilities with about 30,000 payment terminals.

BPS-Sberbank started cooperating with American Express in the summer of 2010. Currently the Bank is an acquirer of American Express cards in Belarus. “Naturally, we as partners have always sought, having made a number of steps, to develop full-fledged infrastructure, sign an agreement on the issue of these cards in Belarus,” said Oleg Borodko.

According to him, this goal remains unchanged. "The first step is the development of terminal equipment; the second one is the development of e-commerce. The first transaction using an American Express card was done on the website of Belavia to purchase tickets on 20 August. “We will move forward, develop software and hardware, infrastructure, card services to reach an agreement on American Express card issue in the near future,” the BPS-Sberbank representative said. Oleg Borodko noted that the Bank is open to cooperation with other banks in part of American Express card acceptance in Belarus.

GNS business development director, General Director of American Express Travel Service East Irina Belova noted that the company is now focused on the acquiring network development with its partner BPS-Sberbank. “The agreement which has been signed between Belarusbank and BPS-Sberbank today is good news for retail and service industries in Belarus. It means more opportunities for companies to provide services to American Express card holders,” she said.

Irina Belova expressed confidence that the company’s partnership with BPS-Sberbank will continue evolving. “We consider Belarus as a highly promising market for us, having huge potential. An increase in the demand for noncash transactions in the country is of especial interest to us. This is the area where we with our partner are going to contribute. We will continue working with BPS-Sberbank, our exclusive acquirer, to introduce new solutions into the acquiring business, implement new technical projects,” Irina Belova said.
