CEC meets with OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission

MINSK, 21 August (BelTA) - The Central Election Commission of Belarus (CEC) has met with head of the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission Antonio Milososki of Macedonia and several long-term OSCE/ODIHR observers on 21 August, BelTA learnt from Secretary of the CEC Nikolai Lozovik.

The representatives of the mission were given accreditation certificates. The CEC officials informed the OSCE/ODIHR observers about the preparations for the parliamentary elections and the electoral legislation of Belarus.

Antonio Milososki informed that 36 long-term and 270 short-term observers from over 20 countries will monitor the Belarusian parliamentary elections. He also thanked the CEC for their remarks on the report of the OSCE/ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission that was undertaken from 16 to 18 July.

The head of the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission suggested holding regular meetings with the CEC, discussing problems that can arise during visits to district and precinct election commissions and meetings with participants of the electoral process.

The OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission will traditionally compile two reports. The first will be prepared prior to the vote and the second after the elections.

The CEC noted that all previous election observation missions praised friendly atmosphere created by election commissions. The CEC officials expressed hope that the OSCE observers will enjoy the same welcoming atmosphere during the 2012 parliamentary elections.

According to Nikolai Lozovik, the CEC accreditation certificates had earlier been given to four representatives of the technical group of the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission. On 21 August eight more accreditation certificates were presented. As of 21 August a total of 33 OSCE/ODIHR representatives have been accredited.
