Belarusian student wins gold medal at IChO in Washington

MINSK, 1 August (BelTA) - Nikifor Lazovsky, a gymnasium student from Slutsk, Belarus, won the gold medal at the 44th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) that was held in Washington from 21 to 30 July, BelTA learnt from the Minsk Oblast Institute for Education Development.

Nikifor Lazovsky was one of four representatives of Belarus at the International Chemistry Olympiad. The competition was held in two rounds: theory and a practical round.

Prior to the Olympiad the Education Ministry of Belarus organized the students’ training with the assistance from the Belarusian State University, the Minsk State Linguistic University, the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after Maksim Tank, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and other institutions.

Nikifor Lazovsky is a regular participant of the nationwide Olympiads in several disciplines. In the 2011/2012 school year he participated in the final rounds of four such Olympiads and won medals three times.

The International Chemistry Olympiad was first held in 1968. School students of 15+ are eligible to participate in the contest. Each country sends a team of four students who score points individually. The 2013 International Chemistry Olympiad will be held in Moscow.
