Candidate registration to conclude in Belarus on 23 August

MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) – Registration of candidates to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly will conclude in Belarus on 23 August, BelTA has learnt.

In line with the election calendar, 23 August is the deadline for registration of parliamentary candidates.

However, the Central Election Commission (CEC) asked district election commissions to finish the work on 22 August. Wherever the CEC fails to register candidates on 22 August, the registration will be held on 23 August.

Party members make up over 50% (or 252) of potential parliamentary candidates who filed applications.

Over 20 MPs of the outgoing parliament and MPs of the past convocations are going to stand for parliament. Potential parliamentary candidates include media persons, famous artists, self-employed businessmen, doctors and temporarily unemployed people.

On the country average, four to five people run for one parliamentary seat. There are no electoral districts where only one candidate will campaign; however, the CEC informed that this situation will be quite possible after the registration procedure is complete. In the past parliamentary elections, the elimination at this stage was about 25%.

The election campaign will be held starting the candidate registration day until 22 September. The election day is scheduled for 23 September.
