Belarus wins bronze in women's K4 500m
MINSK, 8 August (BelTA) - The Belarusian team of Irina Pomelova, Nadezhda Popok, Olga Khudenko and Marina Poltoran won the women's K4 500m bronze at the Olympic Games on 8 August, BelTA has learnt.
The Belarusian team put in a good performance in the final but eventually found themselves behind Hungary and Germany. Hungary clocked 1:30.827, Germany 1:31.298 and Belarus 1:31.400.
Irina Pomelova, Nadezhda Popok, Olga Khudenko and Marina Poltoran have been recently doing good snatching the gold medal at the European championship in 2011 and winning top places in the recent world championships. Olga Khudenko and Marina Poltoran will compete for medals in the women’s K2 500m final on 9 August.
Two Belarusian canoe sprinters, however, failed to win medals. Oleg Yurenia came sixth in the men's K1 1000m final and Alexander Zhukovsky seventh in the men's C1 1000m final.
Andrei and Alexander Bogdanovich of Belarus finished second in the men's C2 1000m semifinal with the result of 3:36.540 on 7 August. The result saw the brothers through to the 9 August final.
Belarus has nine Olympic medals as of 8 August. Shooter Sergei Martynov, shot-putter Nadezhda Ostapchuk and tennis duo Victoria Azarenka/Max Mirnyi won gold medals. Alexandra Gerasimenya picked up two silver medals. Victoria Azarenka, weightlifters Marina Shkermankova and Irina Kulesha and the Belarusian K4 crew have bronze medals.
Belarus is 16th in the overall medal count. China is first with 73 medals (34, 21, 18), team U.S. just behind with 70 medals (30, 19, 21). Team GB completes the top three boasting 48 medals (22, 13, 13). The Russian Olympic team has the same number of medals as team GB but won less golds (10, 18, 20).
