Semashko: Cost of Belarusian NPP affordable

MINSK OBLAST, 17 February (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia have agreed that the cost of the Belarusian NPP will not exceed the cost of the nuclear power plant in Kaliningrad, First Vice Premier Vladimir Semashko told Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko during their visit to Minsk CHP Plant No.5 on 17 February.

“At my meeting with Sergei Kiriyenko we have agreed and signed it into the protocol that the cost of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will not exceed the cost of the Kaliningrad NPP,” Vladimir Semashko said.

Vladimir Semashko believes that the construction of the Belarusian NPP might be even cheaper due to the use of domestic materials, equipment and workforce.

We have opportunities to make our NPP project slightly cheaper,” said Vladimir Semashko.

Vladimir Semashko stressed that all the fundamental issues regarding the construction of the nuclear power plant have been resolved. All preparatory works for the construction of the nuclear power plant have been completed. According to Vladimir Semashko, on 31 January a contract was signed for the design of the nuclear power plant. Atompromstroyexport has already started working on the design works, which suggests the development of documentation on excavations. According to the First Deputy Prime Minister, they have to be completed by mid-2013, and concreting work will start in September 2013. “We want to have the first unit operational in 2017. So far everything is going on schedule, in accordance with the arrangements,” Vladimir Semashko said. He also added that work schedules were discussed at a meeting with Mr. Kiriyenko. The general contractor is responsible for complying with the terms of the contract.
