Belarus intensifies efforts for competitive growth in SES

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) – Belarus is working hard on technical regulations to enhance its competitive ability in the Single Economic Space (SES), First Vice Premier of Belarus Vladimir Semashko said at a meeting of the State Committee for Standardization (SCS) on 16 February.

Development of technical regulations and standards is of top priority for the SES functioning since they enhance competitive power of Belarusian producers. “The issues of developing technical regulations and standards are overwhelmingly important, especially within the Single Economic Space. The country will face a sharp competition, and it needs to adopt certain standards and norms to protect its producers,” Vladimir Semashko said.

Speaking about energy efficiency, the official noted that a lot has been done in the sector. “We have almost triple GDP since 1997 without increasing energy consumption,” he stressed.

As for the innovation and investment development of the country, Vladimir Semashko emphasized the importance of expertise for design construction documents, which helps discover reserves for resource saving in the implementation of large-scale projects. On the whole, the First Vice Premier praised the SCS efforts.

According to Viktor Nazarenko, the SCS First Deputy Chairman, standardization is an integral part in the implementation of technical regulations and advancement of Belarusian products on the whole.

In 2011, taking into account the country’s economic needs and priorities, Belarus developed standards in energy efficiency, equipment safety, electric engineering, telecommunications, information technologies, construction materials, food and others. In all, there were adopted nearly 500 government standards. Their harmonization with international and European standards made up 79%. The highest results were reached in the construction, forestry, woodworking and light industries, engineering and metallurgy.
