Myasnikovich, Rapota discuss prospects for cooperation in Union State

MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) - Belarus and Russia have a significant potential to enhance cooperation in the Union State, Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with State Secretary of the Union State Grigory Rapota in Minsk on 8 February.

A lot has already been done for the development of the partnership between the two countries. “We need to think how we can promote multi-stage integration in the future,” the PM said. In his view, Belarus and Russia have very good prospects for partnership in the form of the Union State.

The cooperation between the two countries should be developed primarily in three main areas: economic, social and military, Grigory Rapota told journalists. In economy Belarus and Russia have already reached a high level of cooperation, including in customs and tariff regulations. Grigory Rapota noted that cooperation in the Union State in the given areas is longer and deeper as compared with the Customs Union. Economic interaction needs to be further developed within the framework of bilateral cooperation.

Another promising area for partnership is social services (health, education). Here, too, the countries have achieved a lot. There is a need to outline the steps for future cooperation in this area.

The two countries have made good headway in the area of military cooperation. “These include joint military exercises, training, and logistics. We need to continue working in this direction,” Grigory Rapota.

Union State programs are crucial to the integration between Belarus and Russia. Thirteen of them are currently underway. “Eight more are in the pipeline. We want to get approval from the Union State highest authorities and have them launched this tear,” he said.

Grigory Rapota assured that he will do his best to further enhance cooperation between Belarus and Russia. He stressed that it was essential for him to hear the Prime Minister’s opinion on the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.
