Belarus to promote strategic partnership with China

MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – Belarus will keep developing strategic and mutually beneficial partnership with China, Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Alexander Gurianov said at a reception on 19 January dedicated to the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, BelTA has learnt.

The Deputy Foreign Minister underlined that this reception symbolizes a new stage in Belarus-China relations. In his view, over the 20 years the two countries managed to establish close ties on the official level as well as on the level of government agencies, regions and companies despite the great distance between them. Alexander Gurianov underlined that the $3 billion bilateral trade in 2011 demonstrates that Belarus and China have achieved a lot in many fields. Alexander Gurianov emphasized that it is symbolic that the event is held in the House of Friendship, because it is friendship that is the foundation of Belarus-China relations. Congratulating Belarusian and Chinese friends on the anniversary, the Deputy Foreign Minister expressed confidence that our countries will reach new heights.

Chairperson of the Presidium of the Belarusian Society of Friendship and Cultural Links with Foreign Countries Nina Ivanova noted that the China-Belarus friendship society has been working for over 50 years. Over this time the two peoples could learn more about each other, as the House of Friendship holds a variety of events every year and public diplomacy is a considerable addition to official links between the two states.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Belarus Gong Jianwei also said that Belarus is China’s reliable partner. In his words, the 20th anniversary of Belarus-Chinese diplomatic relations is a great holiday for the countries and another milestone in the bilateral cooperation. Over a relatively short time, our countries have made a great progress. The cooperation in politics, economy, culture and education is on the rise.

Gong Jianwei said that he has been in Minsk only nine days, but he has already felt the cordial and friendly attitude of the Belarusian people and the determination to expand links with China. The day before he visited Lukoml state district power station where a new power unit is to be constructed with the help of China. The ambassador expressed confidence that the power unit will be commissioned as early as in two years. He is convinced that the New Year that starts on 23 January according to the Chinese calendar will mark significant achievements in the bilateral cooperation.

The reception concluded with a concert featuring Chinese artists who sang Chinese and Belarusian songs. An anthem of the China-Belarus friendship society was performed.
