Belarus-China trade up 100 times over 20 years

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – Over the last 20 years the trade between Belarus and China has increased almost 100 times. The two countries started with the trade turnover of about $30 million. Now this figure is approaching $3 billion, Belarus Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov said at a solemn event on 17 January to mark the 20th anniversary of the Belarusian-Chinese diplomatic relations.

In his words, by historical standards this period is relatively small, but very much significant in the history of bilateral relations. Belarus has been building and strengthening its statehood and independence. China has been building up its power at a rapid pace.

Belarus-China cooperation successfully develops at the presidential and governmental levels as well as between ordinary people. Today the two countries have been closely collaborating in different areas including spacecraft development.

According to the minister, the strategic partnership between the two countries was laid down in the relevant documents during the visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to Beijing in 2009. Then the two leaders signed a joint declaration on strategic partnership.

Sergei Martynov expressed confidence that Belarus and China would continue close cooperation. He stressed that China may always count on Belarus as its reliable partner.
