NPP construction to begin in June 2012

MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) – The construction work at the site of the future Belarusian nuclear power plant will start in June 2012, Anatoly Bondar, Chief Engineer of the Nuclear Power Plant Construction Directorate, told BelTA.

The process of coordinating issues with the Russian party on the construction project is in full swing.

All necessary documents have been prepared by BelNIPIenergoprom. “The Russian side considers and approves the design and working documents. We believe we will be ready to start the construction this June,” Anatoly Bondar said.

The contract on exploration, development of project documentation and top-priority working papers will be signed no later than February. According to this contract, Atomstroyexport will develop the documentation regarding the foundation pit and the plant itself.

Belarus’ first nuclear power plant will use the Russian design AES-2006. It has been developed by the Saint Petersburg-based research and design institute Atomenergoproject (part of the Russian state-run corporation Rosatom).
Preparatory works are currently underway. Construction of road and rail line, manufacturing facilities is in progress.
