Local specialists to design physical security for Belarus’ NPP

MINSK, 25 January (BelTA) – The physical security system for the future Belarusian nuclear power plant will be designed and built by domestic companies, Acting Director General of the Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny Anna Kievitskaya told reporters on 25 January, BelTA has learnt.

This is stipulated in the contract signed with the Russian Atomstroyexport. The physical security system consists of surveillance, security and fire alarms, admission control and management. The physical security system will ensure protection against unauthorized access to the NPP installations, including nuclear materials.

Head of the department for physical security of nuclear materials and installations of the institute Sosny Gennady Vasilevich informed that the developers of the physical security system of the future NPP will take into consideration world’s best practices. “Such a system uses the so-called design basis threat to prevent the theft of valuable materials from the nuclear power plant,” the expert explained. Taking part in the work are the Emergencies Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the KGB and other ministries and government agencies. The physical security system will be designed using common approaches taking into consideration the IAEA recommendations.
