Nomination of candidates to Belarus’ upper house to start 2 August

MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – Nomination of candidates to the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the fifth convocation will be held 2 August through 31 August, BelTA learnt from the Secretary of the Central Election Commission Nikolai Lozovik.

Regional and urban councils of deputies, regional executive committees and city halls as well as the Presidium of the Minsk Council of Deputies and the Minsk City Hall have the right to nominate their candidates to the upper house of the Belarusian parliament.

Registration of candidates begins 60 days and closes 55 days before the term of the standing Council of the Republic expires. This year the CEC will register candidates for the senator’s seat from 1 to 5 September, Nikolai Lozovik said.

Minsk and regional councils of deputies each elect eight candidates for the Council of the Republic by secret vote.

Eight members of the Council of the Republic are appointed by the President of the Republic of Belarus.
