OSCE/ODIHR interested in representation of Belarusian parties at election commissions

MINSK, 17 July (BelTA) – The OSCE/ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission is most interested in representation of Belarusian parties in territorial election commissions, Vasily Baikov, Chairman of the State Construction, Local Government, and Regulations Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, told reporters following the meeting with the OSCE/ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission, BelTA has learnt.

Vasily Baikov noted that the meeting lived up to expectations of the both parties. After visiting Belarus, the mission will draw up a report within 10 days. The document will be submitted to the OSCE top officials, the MP said. The report will advise on the deployment of the OSCE/ODIHR election observation activity, Vasily Baikov said.

He noted that Belarusian MPs helped the mission to discover new things about Belarus’ electoral system. “In particular, we tried to explain that the majority election system is more democratic than the proportional representation system. I think they got a new idea of these systems,” the MP said.

The meeting had been initiated by the OSCE/ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission in the run-up to the forthcoming election to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus and the invitation for OSCE observers to monitor the election.
