Smolensk Oblast interested in getting agricultural specialists trained at Belarusian universities

MINSK, June 8 (BelTA) – Smolensk Oblast, Russia is interested in getting agricultural specialists trained at Belarusian universities. The idea was discussed at a meeting of Acting Agriculture and Food Minister of Belarus Leonid Marinich and Vice Governor of Smolensk Oblast Igor Lyakhov in Minsk on 8 June, the press service of the Agriculture and Food Ministry told BelTA.

Leonid Marinich and Igor Lyakhov agreed that the bordering areas of Smolensk Oblast and Belarus maintain tight cooperation that should be developed. Igor Lyakhov mentioned partnering relations with Belarusian enterprises in deliveries of agricultural machines and confirmed the intention to continue this work. Taking into account the affinity of natural climatic conditions Smolensk Oblast is ready to borrow Belarusian agricultural crop farming practices. The Russian region is also highly interested in getting agricultural personnel trained and re-trained at Belarusian universities.

Cooperation in melioration matters was also discussed. Leonid Marinich suggested looking into the possibility of employing Belarusian specialists to implement the melioration program in Smolensk Oblast. The Acting Agriculture and Food Minister stressed, for more effective cooperation of the sides it is necessary to create integrated structures involving joint capital and it is necessary to work out a common policy on agricultural exports. In the future the Customs Union member states should sell products using a common trademark as “a Customs Union product”, he remarked.

As part of the efforts to step up manufacturing cooperation ties between Belarus and Smolensk Oblast the sides reached an agreement to examine ways to cooperate in growing and processing flax and rapeseed. The sides will also consider the possibility of creating joint logistics centers.
