Belarus already assembling Chinese cars

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Belarus is already implementing a project to assemble Chinese cars, First Deputy Premier of Belarus Vladimir Semashko told Belarusian MPs on 22 June, BelTA has learnt.

“We have already started implementing the project in cooperation with the famous Chinese company Geely. We have established a joint venture; the first two cars have already been assembled by OAO BATE. So far it is semi-knocked down. The tests and certification procedures will be held in three months,” Vladimir Semashko said.

After that a full-blown production of cars with press working, welding and painting will be launched at the Chinese industrial park. Vladimir Semashko said that this project does not run afoul with Russia because “there is a 2009 industrial assembly agreement that has set forth the terms”. In line with these terms, the localization should make 50% or more. “If we do it, we will get the right for CT-1 certificate, which means that the product was made in Belarus”, he said.

The project is already underway. It is personally supervised by Industry Minister Dmitry Katerinich and monitored by the Prime Minister. Each month reports are submitted on the state of efforts to implement the project.
