CSTO session in Moscow discussing security threats

MINSK, 15 May (BelTA) – President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is taking part in a session of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Moscow on 15 May, BelTA has learnt.

The ongoing session of the Collective Security Council marks the 20th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty. The treaty was signed in Tashkent on 15 May 1992. The Collective Security Treaty Organization was established ten years ago, on 14 May 2002. Taking part in the Moscow summit are leaders of the Participating states, including Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The heads of state will discuss pressing issues of the international agenda and joint effort to respond to global and regional security challenges and threats facing the member states.

The presidents will review the CSTO activities over the ten years. Since it was established, the organization has turned into a key instrument of maintaining collective peace in its responsibility zone and providing an adequate response to a wide range of modern challenges and threats. The CSTO priorities are improving the collective security system, including optimization of military and defense cooperation and better coordination of the foreign policy of the CSTO member states.

The heads of state are expected to adopt a declaration evaluating the major trends of the international development and the CSTO efforts, to confirm their commitment to the goals and principles of the Collective Security Treaty and readiness to promote and deepen allied relations in foreign policy, military and defense cooperation, and fight against transnational challenges and treats to security and stability.
