Belarus, Ukraine to develop cargo traffic on Dnieper
MINSK, 10 May (BelTA) – Belarus plans to develop international cargo traffic on the Dnieper River in cooperation with Ukraine, BelTA learnt from the Transport and Communications Ministry.
The prospects of developing water transport in Belarus have been discussed at the recent meeting with the participation of Belarus Vice Premier Anatoly Kalinin.
“We were able to resume a dialogue with the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine to develop international cargo traffic on the Dnieper. A trial shipment of oil products from Mozyr to Ukraine on a self-propelling tanker in the end of 2011 was quite successful,” the ministry said.
The meeting highlighted efficiency of water transport, evolvement of a logistic hauling system shifting traffic flow from railway to water and motor transport, and tourism development on water facilities. Companies subordinate to the Transport Ministry have improved the situation with river ports in Brest, Mogilev, Mikashevichi and Dneprobugvodput. Upgrading of the Dnieper-Bug canal is in full swing. The works at the Trishin hydro system have been completed. Reconstruction of the Zaluzye navigation lock is underway. The Novosady hydro-electric power plant is under construction.
Special attention is paid to the work to attract investment in water transport. In particular, the Transport Ministry signed an investment agreement to construct a port terminal on the Dnieper.
Since 2004 the Transport Ministry jointly with the Ministry of Sport and Tourism has been engaged in the development of tourism activities on waterways. Water transport organizations have created departments of tourism, developed action plans for tourist excursions using passenger ships. However, it was noted that the work will not give the intended results without active participation of the regional committees for sport and tourism.
According to Anatoly Kalinin, water transport organizations have performed a significant amount of work, but many issues still need to be solved.
