IOM launches new project with Belarusian border guards
MINSK, 10 May (BelTA) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is starting a new project involving Belarusian and Ukrainian border guards, Chief of the Minsk Mission of the IOM Dejan Keserovic told reporters on 10 May, BelTA has learnt.
“Today we have registered a new project to enhance the capacity of border agencies of Ukraine and Belarus in patrolling the green and land border,” Dejan Keserovic said.
Talking about the increasing migration flow via Belarus to the EU, he said, “This issue is not new. We are working on it together with border guards”. He emphasized that integration processes in the EU and the establishment of the Customs Union pose new challenges for border guards and customs agencies.
Talking about cooperation between the IOM and the CIS, Dejan Keserovic noted that the organization has an office in each CIS member state. The IOM operation in the CIS is based on unilateral and multilateral agreements. The organization signed memoranda of cooperation not only with the CIS, but also with the CSTO and the EurAsEC. “This means we are working with the Commonwealth on various levels. The agenda varies depending on a region. We have different issues to address in Central Asia and in Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova,” the Chief of the Minsk Mission of the IOM explained.
