"We should proceed from the fact that we are not going to build millions of square meters of hosing on agricultural land. There are some land plots that are not fit for farming and can be given to domestic clients for small housing development,” said the President.

"We have lots of idle land. We do not need to overpopulate urban areas. This work requires a through approach needed,” stressed the head of state.

Serious work is carried out to identify inefficient use of land suitable for small housing developments, reported Boris Batura, the Chairman of Minsk Oblast Executive Committee.

According to Vice Prime Minister Anatoly Kalinin, 62,000 people, mostly those from the waiting list for better housing, have stated their interest in small housing development program. A pilot development project can be implemented in Minsk Oblast. According to the Vice Premier, this project mage give dying villages a new lease on life. The government is also considering options to assist with small housing development by subsidizing the purchase of construction materials, introducing preferences for developers involved in small housing projects, exempting them from some taxes as today it is not lucrative for a development company to get engaged in small housing projects.
