CIS MPs agree on joint action to defend interests of CIS countries

MINSK, 23 November (BelTA) – The CIS IPA MPs agreed to coordinate action for the protection of the interests of the CIS member states at a meeting of the commission for political affairs and international cooperation of the Permanent Commission of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly in St. Petersburg on 22 November, BelTA learnt from Ms Valentina Leonenko, a member of the permanent commission for international affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus. Ms Valentina Leonenko was elected vice-chair of the commission for political affairs and international cooperation of the Permanent Commission of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.

Valentina Leonenko made a speech before colleagues and urged delegations of the CIS IPA countries to joint action to defend the national interests of Belarus in connection with the recent decisions of the European Union and the European Parliament. “This information was received with interest. We agreed to coordinate our actions in inter-parliamentary associations to defend the interests of each of the CIS member state,” the MP said.

The MPS also discussed the results of the CIS IPA observation over the recent elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus and approved the agenda of the seminar on international standards for democratic elections which will be held in St. Petersburg on 7 December. “The seminar will have a very packed agenda and will be attended by representative delegations from each CIS member state. The seminar will bring together the chairmen of all central election commission of the CIS member states,” said Ms Valentina Leonenko.

The delegation of the National Assembly of Belarus took part in a scientific forum on the Eurasian economic integration on 22 November.

The Belarusian parliamentary delegation led by Chairman of the Council of the Republic Anatoly Rubinov attended parliamentary events in St. Petersburg on 22-23 November. Belarusian MPs took part in the meetings of the CIS Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (CIS IPA) and Council the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO PA).

The Belarusian parliamentary delegation also included Vladimir Senko, the chairman of the permanent commission for international affairs and national security of the Council of the Republic. The lower house of the Belarusian parliament was represented by the chairman of permanent commission for national security Alexander Mezhuyev and the chairman of the permanent commissions for education, culture and science Gennady Paltchik, and for international affairs Valentina Leonenko and for national security Zygmund Valevach.
