Sports is part of ‘big economics’, Lukashenko says

MINSK, 26 October (BelTA) – Sport is part of big economics, the head of state, President of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said opening the NOC meeting.

The President stressed that during the meeting on Olympic issues, “we need to answer the question why, with this great attention paid to the sport by the state, there is degradation in many areas. Where is this light at the end of the tunnel? Who see it? Which direction we should go?” asked the head of state.

“I want you to understand one thing: everything should be fair and honest. For me personally and for the state sports is a great thing, it is part of big economics,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

The President cited the example of World No.1 Victoria Azarenka as an example. “It is not just the image and prestige when she wins. It is an economic competition,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

“This is what sports is about, this is what an athlete’s success is about and what it means for the country. This is the role and the meaning of sports for our country,” the head of state said.
