CIS Electric Power Council praised as most efficient industrial association in CIS

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) - The CIS Electric Power Council is the most efficient industrial association in the CIS system, First Vice Premier of Belarus Vladimir Semashko said at the meeting of the council in Minsk.

In my opinion, the CIS Electric Power Council is the most efficient industry association in the CIS system. What is happening now in the international financial markets attests that the position repeatedly voiced by Belarus is the right one: we must work in the real production sectors of the economy rather than inflate financial bubbles,” Vladimir Semashko said.

Belarus has traditionally favored the development of all-round integration in the CIS, said Vladimir Semashko. “We attach special significance to the sectoral integration. The adoption of practical and mutually beneficial decisions at the sectoral level will ensure further or parallel adoption of decisions at the highest level. In this regard, I am pleased to note the efficient operation of the CIS Electric Power Council,” Vladimir Semashko noted.

Over 20 years of its existence, the council has done a great job, the main result of which is synchronous operation of eight out of eleven national power grids of the CIS member states. In addition, the CIS energy systems operate in parallel with the power grids of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Estonia and Georgia. Electricity is exchanged under other schemes with the power systems of Norway, Finland, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and China.
Development of legal framework in the CIS electric power industry is an important area of work for the CIS Electric Power Council.

Today it is important to preserve and further develop partner relations between the CIS energy systems, the First Vice Premier believes. The CIS energy engineers are facing three overriding tasks. “First of all, it is structural modernization and reformation of the national energy systems for sustainable operation in the increasing competition and creation of quality living conditions for the people of our states. Secondly, it is synchronous operation of the CIS energy systems. Thirdly, implementation of big mutually beneficial projects through the unification of the CIS potential to enhance economic security and wellbeing of the population,” Vladimir Semashko said.

Minsk is hosting the 42nd meeting of the CIS Electric Power Council. The agenda of the meeting includes integration processes in electric power industry of the CIS states, preparation of the CIS energy systems for the 2012-13 autumn/winter season. The participants of the council will discuss the situation with the energy systems in Central Asia, a draft list and principles to form the systemic and additional services within the IPS/UPS synchronous zone, cooperation of the CIS Electric Power Council with Eurelectric and other international energy organizations.
