Belarus eager to help modernize Cuba economy

MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to take an active part in the modernization of the Cuban economy. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he met with Mr Marino Murillo, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, on 18 October, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko remarked the visit of the Cuban delegation to Belarus was aimed at developing the arrangements made by the two heads of state during a recent visit of the Belarus President to Cuba. “We have agreed that a Cuban delegation will arrive in Belarus and we will discuss all the matters the head of the delegation will raise,” said the Belarusian leader.

“I know that Cuba’s leadership is interested in development avenues and the reformation system of our economy. I’ve promised Raoul Castro that we will show everything and will tell everything we are doing in Belarus. If this or that prospect appeals to you, we will definitely take part in implementing it in the Cuban territory similarly to how we do it in Venezuela,” remarked Alexander Lukashenko.

In particular, agriculture can be one of the areas where Belarus and Cuba may promote mutually beneficial cooperation. Agriculture development is a priority in the modernization of the Cuban economy. “Cuba has huge resources for modernizing the agriculture. Cuba spends at least $1.5 billion on importing food and all the things required to develop the agriculture. I think that reducing the sum by $100-200 million every year while substituting the imports by Cuba-made products could be a good source of funding,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

“We are ready to take into account of all your wishes and are ready to act in this area,” assured the Belarus President.

Belarus is also interested in some areas, which have been seriously developed in Cuba. “Cuba is rich as far as the development of healthcare and the production of medications are concerned. We have developed and are busy implementing a similar program and your experience could be extremely valuable,” stressed the President of Belarus.

In turn, Marino Murillo underlined the great interest in the promotion of Belarusian-Cuban cooperation. “The itinerary of our visit is tightly packed and interesting,” he said. “The transformation of the Belarusian economy and the Belarusian society are of great interest to us. It is important for us to see all the processes with our own eyes. It is very organized”.

“I am convinced that in the next few years we will be able to maintain contacts at the level of ministries and specialists. It could be very beneficial for both sides. We should work on it more in order to find mutually beneficial areas of bilateral cooperation and to be able to implement concrete projects,” remarked Marino Murillo.
