Union State lays foundation for other integration projects, Gigin says

MINSK, 17 October (BelTA) – The Union State of Belarus and Russia has laid the foundation for other integration projects, Vadim Gigin, the Editor-in-Chief of the Belaruskaya Dumka Magazine, said during a teleconference "The Union of Belarus and Russia: What are the Benefits?” (Minsk-Moscow-St. Petersburg-Tomsk).

“The Union State has fulfilled a very important historic mission. It served as the model of allied relations, which laid the foundation for other integration projects,” said Vadim Gigin. He added that in the next 5 to 15 years Eurasian integration projects will be in the focus of attention of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.

The expert also noted that in the course of the so-called dairy and oil wars the sides elaborated a mechanism for settlement of disputes. For the past two years, there have been no such problems in the Union State.

Vadim Gigin stressed that during the 1994 presidential elections Alexander Lukashenko made an emphasis on the union with Russia in his electoral campaign.

According to Vadim Gigin, Belarus is among the top six destinations most attractive for Russian investors. The military and political aspect is also important here. The two countries have been steadily developing cooperation in this area.

According to Vadim Gigin, Belarusians and Russians can debate a lot as to whether there is a difference between them, but in any case, Belarusians and Russians share mentality. Many of them practise the same religion.
