Lukashenko welcomes Hugo Chavez’s victory at presidential election

MINSK, 8 October (BelTA) – President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has welcomed the victory of Hugo Chavez at the presidential election in Venezuela and ordered the Presidential Administration to enhance Belarus-Venezuela cooperation across all the avenues. The statement was made on 8 October, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian head of state.

“I do not know about you, but I had a sleepless night because of the election in Venezuela. I am very happy about the victory of our friend Hugo Chavez. I should say, he has done a great job. There are some things even we can learn from this election. This was an undisputed victory and the chief alternative candidate admitted his defeat. This is also dear, because it demonstrates the dignity of this person,” the President said.

Alexander Lukashenko noted that the letter of congratulation to Hugo Chavez on behalf of the Belarusian people is being prepared. “We have already contacted the executive staff of Hugo Chavez, delivered our best wishes; a warm congratulation on behalf of the Belarusian people should be delivered to this heroic person. Victory in such circumstances attests to the great trust,” the Belarusian leader said.

“I think we will need to step up our activities in Venezuela. This pertains to all the cooperation avenues. We should help Hugo Chavez demonstrate his appreciation to the Venezuelan people. This is a big piece of work for us and certain benefits. Therefore, we should work on it properly at the Presidential Administration,” the head of state said.
