Belarus President believes CIS future development important

MINSK, 4 October (BelTA) – President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko attaches great importance to the future existence and development of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Alexander Lukashenko made the relevant statement in an interview with the interstate television and radio company Mir on 4 October, BelTA has learned.

Asked what the CIS has achieved in the 20 years of its existence, Alexander Lukashenko remarked: “The primary achievement is that after the USSR collapse, we have not gone our own ways and we have understood what world we live in and what we have to do in the future”.

The Belarusian leader believes that the CIS was the foundation, on which all the integration bodies of a tighter nature have relied in the post-Soviet space. “The union of Belarus and Russia was the first one. Then we decided it was necessary to move on to the second phase – the construction of the Union State. After that the Eurasian Economic Community emerged that sprouted the Single Economic Space primarily thanks to efforts of the Russian Federation. The Collective Security Treaty Organization is a military and political bloc,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

“A platform for discussing more serious, mutually interesting political issues has remained in the CIS. It is the role I’d give to the CIS. Therefore, the CIS significance is big,” the Belarusian head of state is convinced.
