Nomination of candidates to Council of Republic announced valid

MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) – The Central Election Commission of Belarus (CEC) has announced the nomination of candidates to the Council of the Republic valid, BelTA has learnt.

The nomination of candidates to the Council of the Republic (the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament) was held on 2-31 August. The candidates were nominated by presidiums of district and municipal councils of deputies, district and municipal executive committees as well as the Presidium of the Minsk Council of Deputies and Minsk City Council. After that, oblast executive committees and Minsk City Council submitted the nomination documents to the CEC for registration.

Members of the Council of the Republic are chosen by secret ballot at sessions of deputies of local councils in each oblast and deputies of Minsk City Council – eight people from each oblast and the city of Minsk.

The elections to the Council of the Republic are scheduled for 6-25 September.

Another eight senators are appointed by the President of Belarus.
