Khvostov: UNECE plays a key role in interregional trade

MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe plays a key role in optimizing interregional trade that is viewed as an important factor contributing to sustainable development, said Resident Representative of Belarus in the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Mikhail Khvostov. He leads Belarus’ delegation at the 65th session of the UNECE, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

The session is taking place in Geneva on 9-11 April. The head of the Belarusian delegation made a presentation at the High-level segment on one of the items of the agenda that was titled “The future of sustainability: from transition to transformation”. Mikhail Khvostov informed the attendees about Belarus’ vision of the UNECE’s participation in the implementation of the decisions of the UN Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20), which involves first of all assimilation of cutting-edge technologies and encouragement of investments into domestic economies.

Yuri Yaroshevich, Head of the Economic Cooperation and Sustainable Development Office of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, spoke on the topic “Sustainable development governance: regional implications and perspectives for the post-Rio+20 institutional set-up”. He emphasized the need to preserve the important role of regional commissions in implementing the decisions of the Rio+20 conference, to elaborate sustainable development goals and to come up with efficient instruments to fulfill them. He praised the huge efforts of the UNECE in encouraging innovations, enhancing energy efficiency and implementing best practices in the housing sector.
