Makei to meet with Latvian Foreign Minister

MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei will meet his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevicius in Vitebsk on 10 April, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Foreign Ministry.

The ministers are expected to discuss a wide range of issues regarding development of the Belarusian-Latvian cooperation in political, trade, economic and humanitarian areas as well as Belarus-EU collaboration. Besides, the parties will take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the intergovernmental agreement on the local border traffic between Belarus and Latvia which took effect on 1 February 2012.

The sides are expected to sign an agreement on the state border regime. The document will be inked by Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Alexander Boyechko and Head of the State Border Guard of Latvia Normunds Garbars.

The Latvian Republic is an important economic partner of the Republic of Belarus. In 2012 Latvia ranked 5th in trade and 4th in the exports among Belarus’ trading partners.

In 2012 Belarus-Latvia trade increased by 4.6% from 2011 and reached $3,425.1 million. Exports edged up by 4.1% to $3,279.9 million, imports went up by 18.1% to $145.2 million. Belarus had a surplus of $3,134.7 million in trade with Latvia. Belarus’ major exports were products of the petrochemical industry, metallurgy, machine building, agriculture, forestry and food industry. Latvia’s major imports were medicines, fabrics, knitwear, fish, cement, engines and motors, steel structures.

In 2012, the investment increased by 8.2% as against 2011 and amounted to $129.3 million. Direct investment made up $68.2 million (up 10%), of which $25.7 million was direct investment on the net basis (88.7%).

As of 31 January 2013 there were 373 entities with Latvian capital in Belarus (297 in 2011) and 27 representative offices of Latvian companies (1123 enterprises with Belarusian capital, and 15 representative offices of Belarusian economic entities in Latvia).

On 6-9 December 2012 Riga hosted the ninth national expo of the Republic of Belarus in the Republic of Latvia and the 6th Belarusian-Latvian Investment Forum "Baltic Region – 2012”.
