Belarus President orders railroad built to connect Minsk city, Minsk airport

MINSK, 4 April (BelTA) – President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has given instructions to immediately work out the project to enable railroad service between the city of Minsk and the National Airport Minsk. Alexander Lukashenko gave the instruction to the government and the management of Belarusian Railways at the meeting with Mr Peter Spuhler, Director General of the Swiss company Stadler Rail Group, on 4 April, BelTA has learned.

“The existing railways, branches should be considered. The project should be accomplished without delay,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

The President believes that the railway service will greatly improve the capabilities of the airport. “More people will be able to use services of the airport because it will be easier to get there. At present it is a certain problem”.

The head of state remarked that the project should be accomplished in an optimal way, taking into account the existing railroads. It is worth suspending some projects of government programs in order to channel the funds into enabling passenger service with the airport.

The President underlined that it was an extremely important project. He remarked: “We will have the railroad by the time Belarus-made electric trains are shipped to Moscow and we will be able to send our electric trains there”. Alexander Lukashenko added that not a lot of money will be needed to accomplish the project to connect the city and the airport by a railroad if the matter is approached wisely.

It is quite possible that passengers will be able to reach the National Airport Minsk as early as the end of 2014.
