Belarus to present report on ICERD implementation in Geneva

MINSK, 13 August (BelTA) – Belarus is due to present its report on the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), BelTA reports with reference to the United Nations press center.

On 12 August the United Nations committee tasked with combating racial discrimination opened its latest round of work in Geneva. The participants of the meeting are due to review the reports submitted by Chile, Chad, Venezuela, Burkina Faso, Belarus, Jamaica, Sweden, and Cyprus.

The three-week session of the Committee is held 12 to 30 August. The review of Belarus’ report is scheduled for 20-21 August.

The Committee consists of 18 experts and has been founded to observe the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1965. The document entered into force in 1969. Its signatories are 176 states which regularly report to the Committee on their commitment to the document.

The Convention proclaims that all human beings are equal before the law and are entitled to equal protection of the law against any discrimination. The document affirms the necessity of speedily eliminating racial discrimination throughout the world in all its forms and manifestations and of securing understanding of and respect for the dignity of the human person.
