Amendments to Belarus' electoral law in force from 8 December

MINSK, 6 December (BelTA) – The law concerning amendments and additions to some laws of the Republic of Belarus on conducting elections and referendums will take effect starting from 8 December, BelTA learnt from the Central Election Commission of Belarus.

One of the novelties is single-ballot elections to the House of Representatives with the results based on the principle of simple majority. The law will also provide for alterations to the system of election commissions. Minsk and oblast election commissions will join the Central Election Commission, district and precinct election commissions.

The bill will also adjust expenses associated with electoral campaigns. Financial funds for presidential candidates will make up 3,000 to 9,000 basic amounts (one basic amount is now Br130,000). The limit on campaign funds for parliamentary candidates is expected to stay unchanged and will make up 1,000 basic amounts.

Boycotting of elections will be prohibited during election and referendum campaigns.

Some amendments are envisaged to the information which should be presented by candidates. Biographies of candidates are to contain information on the previous criminal record. Candidates are also to file income declarations in case of no permanent employment.
