Belarus, China advocate the need for reform of UN, UN Security Council

BEIJING, 16 July (BelTA) - Belarus and China advocate the need for reform of the United Nations and its Security Council, reads the joint declaration on comprehensive strategic partnership signed at the conclusion of the talks between Alexander Lukashenko and Xi Jinping in Beijing, BelTA learned.

“The parties note that the UN has a central role in safeguarding world peace, promoting global development and strengthening international cooperation," the document says. “The parties advocate the need for the rational and necessary reform of the United Nations and its Security Council, for increasing the representation, especially that of developing states. To reform the Security Council there is a need to find a "package solution" through broad and democratic consultations and to reach the broadest consensus. Setting artificial time frame and forcing a vote is inadmissible,” the document reads.

In general, Belarus and China reaffirmed the unity or similarity of views and approaches towards the current international and regional issues, and expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation within the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organization and other multilateral organizations. Both the countries are in favor of strict compliance with the goals and principles of the UN Charter, solution of interstate disputes and conflicts in hot spots by peaceful means. “The parties are against the use of force or threat of force, against the overthrow of legitimate governments of other states, against the unilateral sanctions imposed by some countries against others, against terrorism in all its manifestations,” says the joint declaration.

Belarus and China have also expressed interest in strengthening cooperation on issues of disarmament and arms control, the fight against terrorism, separatism, extremism and other crimes.
