Vatican wants to help improve relations between Belarus and West

MINSK, 25 June (BelTA) - Apostolic Nuncio (Vatican Ambassador to the Republic of Belarus) Claudio Gugerotti had an audience with the Pope, BelTA learnt from the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus.

According to the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus, during the meeting the Pontiff showed the profound knowledge of the religious, political, cultural and social situation in Belarus. The Pope expressed his cordial liking towards the country. Pope Francis "expressed the hope that with the help of the Holy See the relations of the country with the West will improve through respect, dialogue and mutual understanding.”

The Pope also noted that he was very happy to express his solidarity with Belarus through the gesture of especial attention – the sending of Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran as Special Envoy for the celebrations in Budslav. “The Pontiff promised he will pray for the success of Cardinal's mission. His Holiness gave his blessing to the Catholics of Belarus, whom he knows as devoted, loyal and enthusiastic children of the Catholic Church after the great ordeals of the past. The Pope also asked to convey greetings to all Belarusians, especially to the brothers of the Orthodox Church,” the ECC.

The meeting was also attended by Vatican's Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, who recalled his recent visit to Belarus and reiterated the Holy See's policy, which was demonstrated during the trip.

In the Vatican, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti met with Cardinal Tauran to discuss the details of his visit to Belarus.
